- Apache OpenOffice for MacOS X Fully developed and supported since OpenOffice.org 3.3! Apple MacOS X requirements The current Apache OpenOffice supports Apple MacOS X version 10.7 (Lion) - 10.11 (El Capitan) and macOS 10.12 (Sierra) - 10.13 (High Sierra).
- Apache OpenOffice for Linux Linux Distro/Version Support¶ The current Apache OpenOffice supports most existing Linux distributions and versions. In general the following is needed: Linux kernel version 2.6 or higher, glibc2 version 2.11.1 or higher; Hardware Requirements¶ Memory: Minimum 256 Mbytes RAM (512 MB RAM recommended).
- The last OpenOffice version supporting Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is OpenOffice 4.0.1. Hardware Requirements ¶ CPU: Intel Processor.
Under the hood and supported OSes Being written in the C and Java programming languages, Apache OpenOffice is a platform-independent application that supports Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.
You may want to start OOo from the command line (using the keyboard instead of the mouse). Why? Well, by using the command line, you have more control over what happens when OOo is started. For example, using the command line, you can tell Writer to load a document and print it immediately, or to start without showing the splash screen.

There is more than one way to start OOo from the command line, depending on whether a customized version or the standard download from the OpenOffice.org website has been installed.
If you installed using the download on the OpenOffice.org website, you can start Writer by typing at the command line:
- soffice -writer
or
- swriter
Writer will start and create a new document. Likewise, you can start other OOo components from the command line:
